If you’re anything like me, you think grocery shopping is just one daunting errand that adulthood requires us to complete every week or two, or month, if you can put it off that long. I have recently learned that it does not have to be this way! There is a magical place in which a magical creature full of the produce knowledge you wish you had walks you aisle by aisle and teaches you the ins and outs of the food you should and should not be eating. The place that I speak of is H-E-B and the magical creature, a dietetic intern from UTHealth School of Public Health. Here is why you should get up and take a produce tour today:
1. It’s FREE. Literally, all you have to do is show up, walk around a little and eat. It might just be the best part of your day.
2. Nutrition matters. If you think you’re getting enough fruits and veggies like I did, you’re not. Show up and learn why and how to easily incorporate more into your diet.
3. Variety matters. They tell us to “Eat the rainbow” for a reason. Listen and learn all about the benefits of different colors and types of produce. You will also be pleasantly surprised to find out what new and different textures or tastes now float your boat.
4. Form matters. Do you think canned veggies are terrible and full of sodium like I did? You’re wrong. Do you know whether frozen fruits provide ANY nutritional value or not? Find out. Go forth and gain all the dried vs. frozen vs. canned vs. fresh vs. juice knowledge you can!
5. Tastings. During the tour if there is anything you are curious about, you grab it and give it to your tour guide to hold on to. After the tour you all get to wrap up what you learned and eat! I think that is reason enough.
There you have it. Now, I suggest signing up here ASAP before all the tours fill up.
If you find yourself thirsty for nutrition knowledge after the tour (or if you for some GOOD reason cannot make it) check out our Nutrition resources!
